Transcription

Transcription is the act or process of making a written, printed, or typed copy of words that have been spoken. A transcription service converts spoken text (either live or recorded) into a written or electronic text document. Transcription is frequently used for business, legal or medical purposes. In earlier times, transcribers used abbreviated forms of writing such as shorthand to produce a transcription.

Sometimes a transcription will need to render a language written in a different writing system (e.g. from Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet). This transliteration is based on pronunciation and follows established phonetic conventions.
