Technical editing refers to the creation or updating of technical documentation – also known as product documentation – in other words, all documents that describe a technical product (e.g. user manuals). Such documents are systematically prepared and structured according to their purpose, but must take into account the latest legal requirements and standards. The content of technical documentation may include information about the product in question and how it is to be used. This will take into account the product’s entire life cycle from development to disposal, occasionally even referencing the manufacture of any upstream products. Companies handling their own technical editing will have a technical editing department that is responsible for technical documentation.
