French is an adjective relating to France, its people, or their culture. It may also be used as a noun to refer to a group of natives or inhabitants of France (the French), but not in the singular (“The French answered the phone in a deep voice” is incorrect). It also describes the chief language of France and many areas now or formerly under French control. A couple are countries that have the word “French” as part of their name, such as French Polynesia or French Guiana, although the latter’s official name no longer includes the “French”.
